Source natural, organic calcium for food and drink manufacturers

A calcified red marine algae delivering 32% calcium by weight alongside over 70 co-occurring trace minerals - clinically proven bioavailability and the clean-label story plant-based dairy demands.

Trusted by leading UK food and drink manufacturers, with samples dispatched within a week and reformulation support included.

FLAGSHIP APPLICATION

Match dairy on calcium, win on the label

Plant-based dairy is fighting cow's milk on nutrition - and losing the calcium argument.

BIOVIT closes the gap.

Marine-algae calcium delivers nutritional parity with cow's milk in oat, almond, soy, and coconut bases, with "algae extract" on the ingredient panel matching the category's clean-label story.

OTHER APPLICATIONS

One calcium ingredient. Every fortification format.

Beyond plant-based dairy, BIOVIT's marine-algae calcium drops cleanly into dairy, supplements, powders, bars, gummies, cereals, and children's products - same source story, same regulated claims, same supply chain.

ABOUT THE INGREDIENT

From Atlantic seabed to clean-label fortification

BIOVIT's natural calcium is derived from Lithothamnion calcareum, a red marine algae that grows slowly on the North Atlantic seabed - drawing calcium from cold, mineral-rich seawater into a porous skeletal structure as it matures. Harvested, dried, and milled by Plant-Ex Ingredients in Bristol, every batch is ICP-tested for calcium content and trace mineral profile.

The result is a whole-food calcium source delivering 32,000 mg per 100g alongside more than 70 naturally co-occurring minerals, available as organic (BI090) and natural (BI091). On pack, "algae extract" lands as recognisably natural - and 73% of UK shoppers now expect everyday products to contain only natural vitamins and minerals.

Calcium from marine algae, by the numbers

Three figures that frame the commercial case - the density of the nutrient, the depth of the natural matrix, and the breadth of regulated health claims it unlocks.

32%

Calcium by weight - 32,000 mg per 100g, so very small inclusion rates cover full RI.

70+

Co-occurring trace minerals - magnesium, boron, and strontium in a whole-food matrix.

12

EFSA-authorised health claims spanning bone, muscle, energy, and neurotransmission.

Frequently asked questions

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Suspendisse varius enim in eros elementum tristique.

How does algae calcium compare on bioavailability to calcium carbonate or citrate?

Equivalent. The Swansea University human intervention trial (61 volunteers, 30-day intervention, eight blood markers) confirmed BIOVIT’s natural calcium delivers bioavailability comparable to synthetic calcium sources. The whole-food matrix means brands gain a clean-label declaration without trading off absorption.

What does the ingredient declaration look like on pack?

“Organic algae extract” for BI090 and “Algae extract” for BI091 - both immediately recognisable to shoppers. 73% of UK consumers expect everyday products to contain only natural vitamins and minerals, and a recognisable plant or algae source on the ingredient panel does that work directly.

What’s the typical inclusion rate and cost impact?

0.375 g per portion delivers a ‘Source of’ calcium claim (15% RI), and 0.750 g per portion delivers ‘High in’ (30% RI). Inclusion rates are very small and easy to manage, with per-unit cost impact for finished products typically around 1% of cost of goods. Eiméar will model the exact figure for your formulation.

Is the trace mineral content consistent batch to batch?

Yes. Every batch is tested by ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) for calcium content and the trace mineral profile, with certificates of analysis issued against fixed specifications. The natural variability of any harvested ingredient sits within tolerances tighter than most botanical extracts.

What are sample and commercial lead times?

Samples are dispatched within a week of request. Commercial orders are typically fulfilled in around 3 weeks from confirmed PO. Minimum order quantity is 1 kg for trials, with bespoke formats available on request.

Can BIOVIT support reformulation from synthetic calcium?

Yes. Reformulation support is included in every BIOVIT consultancy. Eiméar Sutton (RNutr MSc) handles the technical work - equivalence mapping, inclusion-rate modelling, stability testing where needed, and updated on-pack claim wording — so the switch lands without disrupting your production schedule.
